A man has been charged with the murder of a rapper’s brother who died after being fatally stabbed more than five years ago.
Stephen Morrisson – brother of grime artist Morrisson – was stabbed in the liver close to the Shell garage in Epping, Essex, at around 8pm on June 23 2020. He was able to get out of his car but then collapsed on the forecourt, where members of the public tried to help him and alerted the emergency services.
The 30-year-old was rushed to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, where he later died from his injuries. Cops today confirmed Yonas Girma, 28, of Hounslow Road, Hanworth, was charged with murder. He is due to appear in Southend Magistrates’ Court.
Detectives said that over the course of a complex and far-reaching investigation, more than 200 hours of CCTV footage was examined and the investigative team has seized and reviewed more than 1,000 exhibits, 50 phones, almost 40 computer items and five vehicles.
Det Chief Insp Greg Wood, of the Kent and Essex serious crime directorate, is senior investigating officer on the investigation into Stephen’s murder. He said: “Today’s action is by no means our end goal, but it is a significant step in this investigation.
“Over the last five years, we have encountered a number of challenges, and we have never lost sight of the reason we continue to work so determinedly – and that is to secure justice for Stephen’s family and friends.
“They have been without Stephen for five years now. That’s five years without a loving son, brother and uncle. Our continued focus on this case means we have left no stone unturned, we continue to strive to bring those responsible for Stephen’s death to justice, no matter what it takes.”
Shortly after news of his brother’s tragic death, popular rapper Morrisson posted an emotional tribute to his twin brother on his Instagram account. He said: “Rest in peace my brother, my friend, my twin, Stevo – I’m gonna miss you bro.
“No words can explain this pain. I’m thankful for everything you done for me and our family. We ain’t no angels but you didn’t deserve to go out like that and I’m thankful I got to bump into you on Father’s Day and cuddle you and tell you I love you and say goodbye.”
A number of high profile names also took to Instagram to offer their condolences. West Ham United and England midfielder Declan Rice, rapper Wretch 32 and producer Naughty Boy are among those to leave comments on the post.
Morrison is well known on the on the grime music scene. Several of his singles have charted on the UK Singles Chart, while also reaching the top 40 of the UK R&B Singles Chart. His 2021 UK garage single, “House & Garage”, reached number 46 and features rapper Aitch.
Stephen’s other brother is Joey Morrisson who dated ex The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) star Lauren Goodger. Goodger also featured in one of Morrison’s videos, which was filmed in her flat, in 2017.
